Giggle and Hoot Crochet Pattern

I do not mind if you sell any Hoot's that you make but please do not sell or post this pattern anywhere else. Also, i'd love to see pictures of anything you guys make with this pattern. Email them to me at sixlittlemice@gmail.com and i'll post them here!

Materials
To make Hoot you will need:
A crochet hook (I used a 3.5mm)
Yarn in the following colours: Blue, Orange, Cream, White and Black
Tapestry needle
Polyfill Stuffing
Tiny piece of black felt for the pupils

Abbreviations
Sc- Single crochet
Dc- Double crochet
Hdc- Half double crochet
Ch- Chain
sc2tog- Single crochet 2 together. To sc2tog: insert your hook into a stitch and draw up a loop. Then insert your hook into the next stitch and draw up a loop. Finally, yarn over (yo) and draw through all 3 loops on your hook.

If you're unsure on how to do a magic ring there's a great video tutorial that explains how to do it on this page: http://www.hookandneedles.com/2008/03/22/amigurumi-tutorial-1/

Eyes (Make 2)
In white yarn:
(Note that the second eye you complete will be done a little differently than the first. Once you finish Rd 6 turn your work so you are now working back in the same direction you just came from and then continue with Rd7)

Round 1: 6sc in Magic Ring (6)
Round 2: 2sc in each sc around (12)
Round  3: *2sc in next sc, sc 1* repeat around (18)
Round  4: * 2sc in next sc, sc 2* repeat around (24)
Round  5: *2sc in next sc, sc 3* repeat around (30)
Change colour to cream
Round  6: *2sc in next sc, sc 4 * repeat around (36)
Round 7: sc in next 2, hdc in next 3, dc in next 3
Fasten off

Wings (Make 2)
In orange yarn:
Chain 6
Round 1:sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 4 ch (5)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2sc in same st, sc to last st, 2sc in last sc (7)
Round 3-4: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc to last st(7)
Round 5: Ch 1, 2sc in same st, sc to last st, 2sc in last sc (9)
Round 6-7:  Ch 1, sc in same st, sc to last st(9)
Round 8: Ch1, hdc in same st, dc in next 2 sts, hdc, sl st in next st, hdc, dc in next 2 sts, hdc
Now we're going to neaten up the sides of the wings by single crocheting around the edges of the entire wing.
Fasten off
In black yarn, sew around the edges of one wing and make horizontal lines across the other.

Feet (Make 2)
To make one foot you will need to make 3 identical toes.
Toe (Make 3 for each foot):

Round 1: 6sc in Magic Ring (6)
Round 2: *2sc, sc in next sc* around (9)
Round 3-5: sc around (9)
Fasten off.

Do this twice more so you have 3 toes all together

Now we need to join the toes together so we can crochet the feet. I use a tapestry needle and the tail from the toes to do this but if your tails aren't long enough just use yarn. The arrows in the below picture show  where I stitch the toes together. I join the toes by sewing two sc's from on toe to 2 sc's from another.

The arrows in the above picture show where I stitch the toes together. I join the toes by sewing two sc's from on toe to 2 sc's from another.
Once that is done you should have something that looks like this
Round 6:  sc around
Round 7: sc2tog around
Round 8-12: sc around

Heart
Round 1:  Sc into Magic Ring 7 times, pull closed and join with sl st
Round 2: Sl st in first stitch, 5 hdc in second stitch, hdc in next two stitches, hdc chain 1 hdc in bottom stitch, hdc in nect two stitches, 5 hdc in next stitch, sl st
Fasten off
In black yarn sew around the edges of the heart.

Body and Head
The body and head are one piece and is crocheted from the bottom upwards.
In Blue yarn:
Round 1: 6sc in Magic Ring (6)
Round 2: 2sc in each sc around (12)
Round 3: *2sc in next sc, sc 1* repeat around (18)
Round 4: * 2sc in next sc, sc 2* repeat around (24)
Round 5: *2sc in next sc, sc 3* repeat around (30)
Round 6: *2sc in next sc, sc 4 * repeat around (36)
Round 7:*2sc in next sc, sc 5* repeat around (42)
Round 8:*2sc in next sc, sc 6 * repeat around (48)
Round 9:*2sc in next sc, sc 7* repeat around (54)
Round 10-22: 1sc in each sc (54)
Round 23: *2sc in next sc, sc 1* repeat around (81)
Round 24-40: sc around (81)

I find that now is a really good time to sew on the eyes, heart and wings and feet. You don't need to finish off or cut the yarn but just take care while sewing that you don't sew your working yarn to the inside of Hoot

Round 41: sc2tog, sc 1* repeat around (54)
Round 42: sc2tog, sc 7* repeat around (48)
Round 43: sc2tog, sc 6* repeat around (42)
Round 44: sc2tog, sc 5* repeat around (36)
Round 45:sc2tog, sc 4* repeat around (30)
Stuff firmy now.
Round 46: sc2tog, sc 3* repeat around (24)
Round 47: sc2tog, sc 2* repeat around (18)
Round 48: sc2tog, sc 1* repeat around (12)
Round 49: sc2tog* repeat around (6)
Fasten off

Beak
Hoots beak was just embroidered  on using orange yarn

Try changing the colours to make Hootabelle

  5. That it so cute! It's just like mini Hoot from the show! It makes me wish I could crochet. You're very talented.

  6. This is fantastic - but before anyone sells toys of mini hoot you will need to check with the ABC as they own the design rights to the image of Hoot and mini hoot

  8. Hi,
Great pattern, I'm making one for my little munchkin.

A little alteration for you though, if you add in a row between 40 and 41 that reverses row 23 (so dec, sc around) it gets you back to 54 stitches to be able to dec, sc7 involved in row 41. So you'd have 49 rows in total.

  9. So do you work this in circles in the traditional way, or in spirals? New to to crocheting and getting a little confused.

  10. I have got a slight adjustment to the stitch counts, to make it clearer:

Round 23: *2sc in next sc, sc 1* repeat around (81)
    Round 24-40: sc around (81)
    Round 41: sc2tog, sc 1* repeat around (54)
    Round 42: sc2tog, sc 7* repeat around (48)

  11. Any chance you could make a Gigglasaurus pattern?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm sorry, what's a Gigglasaurus? If you can link me to a photo i'll have a look and see what I can do.

  13. Here is a video of Giggleasurus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAwprXrn8BI
And for the feet pattern I would add: that you should not fasten off the third toe of each foot, as you can then continue the single crochets around when you have joined all 3 toes together. As long as you do not sew them together at that point where the yarn is still connected. It just looks neater and cleaner that way.

  27. Hello! I am so excited about making this cute owl!! I am making it as a gift. However, as I was working the feet, I didn't notice any directions for the legs. Perhaps my rounds are a little tight (they tend to be) but no mention of stripes or anything. I can figure it out with no problem but I noticed the Hootabelle had quite different legs than Hoot!! Thanks for sharing!!

  30. This is fantastic thanks so much for the pattern! Just wondering with the wings, do you turn it at the end of each row? I couldn't figure how to do it otherwise. Same question as above too with the legs - the instructions dont mention to keep going for a few extra rounds as is evident needs doing. :)

  31. I found this dragon pattern very detailed and excellent tutorial maybe u can adapt it to make the Giggleasurus http://m.instructables.com/id/Crochet-Dragon-Smaug-from-The-Hobbit/

  32. I am a knitter. I have often tried to start crocheting, but without much luck. I am determined to learn this time so that I can make this for my daughter! Thanks for the inspiration :)

  33. Thanks for the patterns.
I've noted that questions regarding the legs are going unanswered, so here is what I'm doing (mid pattern atm). I followed the suggestion above and did not tie off the third toe but worked around the other two. After doing the decrease row I had 14 stitches left and did up to row 12 doing this. It's a bit chunky. It's more in line with the hootabelle picture above, rather than the mini-hoot. So, I'm going to do another decrease row and get it down to 7. Then I'm going to do another nine rows on top of that. Hoping that that is a good length and hoping that his helps others.
If you want to see how it turns out, here's my ravelry link:
    http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Rhaysha/hoot-from-giggle-and-hoot
Also, the pattern calls for black yarn on the wings. It's not. It's deep purple we've got a commercially made Hoot (from ABC) and it's purple, trust me. This also makes sense in terms of "Jimmy Giggle's" costume which is purple and orange.
Finally, I'm not going to use felt for the middle of the eye. I'm going to use black yarn and applique it. If I make another, I'd probably do the first 3 rounds in black and then change to the white. I'd also sew a little glint in there.
This is a fantastic pattern, thanks for sharing it with us. <3

  35. Dear Krystal

First, I would like to thank you for the great patterns that you so kindly published on the Web, I made a few of them and they look great. Second, I would like to try to commercialize the finished dolls and in this respect I wanted to check your copyright requirements. I found that most of other similar designers are copyrighting only the patterns and the descriptions associated with them but not the final product in itself.

Thank you very much for your time,

    Monika
